Art Sessions 1.0 – Skeletons

Zoe Stallard, 30 January 20229 October 2023

Having the opportunity to work and get creative with Amira Hasoon (@amira.hasoon) within the Ruskin school of art in January 2022. It had been a really long time since I just made art without a specific purpose. For a long time I made art for people through custom orders focusing on the media I was most comfortable with; rather than practising and experimenting in different styles and media for no ones benefit but my own so this day was a really refreshing experience.

Initially our subject was to be a beautiful real horse skeleton however arriving on the day we found the horse had been moved earlier than planned so our subjects became two fake human skeletons which we positioned and posed on the floor. Amira introduced me to working with charcoal attached to the end of a bamboo cane which to start with was a strange concept as I am so used to working close up with pen or paint on a surface right in front of me. The scale of work was also much larger than my usual A4/A3 go to. We taped together four A0 size sheets of paper to create a really big space to work.

With the change in perspective and by working standing up this forced my usual need for more precise detail and placement to disappear and the piece evolved into a far more fluid style. I chose to focus in on sections of the skeletons rather than the subjects as a whole to further push away the need for a realistic finished piece.

After finishing with the charcoal we taped paintbrushes to the end of the bamboo canes instead to keep our perspective the same but to add a different dynamic to the piece being created on the floor.

Check out the photos to see what we created – watch this space for further art sessions!

This was a really fun morning with Amira Hasoon. Take the concept of speed dating but instead of changing potential dates after a certain time, you swap your canvas instead. We chose to use a random prompt generator to give us a topic and we swapped paper every 1minute. 4…

Art sessions 3.0 – Still life study

22 March 20229 October 2023

For the third art sessions we chose a traditional still life, using whatever items we could find within the studio. This ended up being old vases, jugs and a gravy boat. Simple items that I could really focus in on shape and detail. We also decided to set up some…
