Sunshine and Deckchairs – The Painting

Zoe Stallard, 8 October 20238 October 2023

This marks the start of a really exciting project for me and to get back painting on canvas with my trusty acrylic paint. I don’t really know why I stopped painting but I put it down to a lack of time (working full time then having my children would do it!) But now they are a little older, there is that nice slice of the day where I have some time for me if its not a work day or time for school runs!

To start this project I chose one of my favourite photos ‘Sunshine and Deckchairs’ which I took summer of 2023 in the Isle of Wight. The colours in this photo are so bright that as soon as I saw the image I knew I wanted to do more with it than for it just to remain a photo.

Sketching the outline I went back to the trusted grid method I learnt in middle school. I didn’t want to spend too much time on the drawing part of this piece as I wanted it to be more about the actual painting so using the grid method helped me plot the image with relative ease. Once the majority was complete I tweaked a few parts which weren’t lining up properly and erased some of my darker grid lines (I am too heavy handed when using pencil!)

Check out the outline below:

This instrument is a Berimbau which is commonly used in the traditional music and martial art of Capoeira. I was asked back in August to personalise this beautiful instrument consisting of 3 parts, the cabaca (dome shape), the verga (stick) and the caxixi (shaker). The brief was a black painted…
