Learning something new – thread painting

Zoe Stallard, 17 August 202417 August 2024

What is thread painting? Basically the art of making a picture out of different embroidery stitches and thread. I came across this one day on an Instagram scroll and its safe to say I was inspired.

I’ve always been into painting or drawing but I have found I struggle to do this in my evening downtime as I feel like I need to have more energy than I have by the end of the day. But then in comes thread painting and its perfect. Everything fits into a box, I can do this in the evenings sat on the sofa and I actually found it really therapeutic.

Ill be honest though there is stitches to learn, different thickness of thread gives different results so me being me I obviously whizzed over the basics and just went for it. I chose to do an image for someone as a birthday gift to give me some accountability and a deadline. Safe to say it took a lot longer than I expected (20 hours to be exact!)

I am so pleased with the end result. Its definitely something I’m going to practice as I found the thickness of thread and also the length of the stitches really did affect how the image looked but for a first go I couldn’t be happier.

Onto the next! Which I am hoping to post on my shop to sell so watch this space! 🙂

The process and technique Glacier Des Deux Alpes began with a simple pencil sketch, mapping out the flow, peaks and slopes to lay the base of this piece. From there, the sky was blocked in with acrylics — broad strokes of blues, greys and whites to create a striking contrast…
