Art sessions 4.0 – Mark making with nature

Zoe Stallard, 3 March 20238 October 2023

Almost a year later now we returned to Art sessions. This time; as we no longer had access to the beautiful space at Ruskin we opted for the local nature reserve. Got muddy and creative with my art buddy Amira Hasoon (@amira.hasoon). Even in the chilly March weather!

Using mud as a paint, this session was all about mark making rather than focusing on a specific subject. Initially I started out my focusing in on tree bark patterns and using the mud with more and less water to create lighter and darker tones. A real lovely part of this afternoon was the people who stopped and spoke to us about what we were doing and finding out they too were creatives in the form of artists or writers.

*Breaking for lunch which meant walking a few miles to the nearest pub and back whilst discussing all things arty as Amira was going to be off on her next residency in the US*

We found a second space where the focus became more on the shapes of the trees and the surrounding nature. Experimenting with ink and how it reacted on the paper with the use of water and pastels. The ink would spread and become quite vein looking mimicking some of the grasses that were around us. Mark making with oil pastel and we created some really cool pieces that we placed on the trees to photograph. Check them out here!

For the third art sessions we chose a traditional still life, using whatever items we could find within the studio. This ended up being old vases, jugs and a gravy boat. Simple items that I could really focus in on shape and detail. We also decided to set up some…

Art Sessions 2.0 – Skeletons continued

Making the most of the access we had to the college, the second art sessions with Amira Hasoon (@amira.hasoon) we focused on experimenting with a different media; gouache, whilst sticking with our original subject of skeletons. For this session we posed both skeletons on an old sofa (with great difficulty…
