Art Sessions 2.0 – Skeletons continued

Zoe Stallard, 20 February 20229 October 2023

Making the most of the access we had to the college, the second art sessions with Amira Hasoon (@amira.hasoon) we focused on experimenting with a different media; gouache, whilst sticking with our original subject of skeletons.

For this session we posed both skeletons on an old sofa (with great difficulty as skulls kept falling off) and this time we changed perspective back to a more comfortable one of having boards on an easel in front of us. I chose to stick with my concept from art sessions 1.0 and focus on different sections of the skeletons rather than the subject as a whole.

The initial outline was in completed in charcoal. I focused on a few different sections; a skull, an arm, a leg and a pelvis, then turning my board 90 degrees after drawing each section to avoid the end piece looking too linear.

Moving onto the paint, I block filled the background in a gorgeous bold blue, then focused in on the bones in different blue tones to create depth and shadow. Once happy I went back over the blue background with some black paint using a paint brush in a ‘dabbing’ effect to add something to the background. The point of this was purely from an experimenting angle but it really did add something more to the overall piece.

Moving away from skeletons with our next art sessions – creating still life with whatever we can find in the basement studio!
